Thai Nguyen University: Towards a comprehensive training scale

On June 26, 2020, Thai Nguyen University has decided to establish School Foreign Languages (on the basis of the Faculty of Foreign Languages), marking an important step in the process of continuing to upgrade and expand the training scale of the unit.

In the trend of globalization and international integration, foreign languages ​​are indispensable needs in all fields and industries. Foreign language training is a great and essential demand in education, requires innovation and enhancement in terms of scale and modes. In that context, that Thai Nguyen University upgraded the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​to School of Foreign Language is a necessary direction.

After the establishment decision in December 2007, the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​(under Thai Nguyen University) stabilized the organizational structure and officially put into operation in August 2008.

At the time of its establishment, the Faculty only had 29 staff members, including 1 doctor and 17 masters. When established, the organizational apparatus of the unit had a Faculty Dean; 03 functional departments (Department of Training – Science and International Relations, Department of Student Affairs, General Department); 04 subjects (English, Chinese, Russian  French).

Through 13 years of construction and development, the structure has ensured the model of a university. The current number of doctors is 18, masters is 114 with 159 staff and lecturers.

According to the plan, the Faculty will continue to have 16 more PhDs studying domestic and foreign research students, who are lecturers of the Faculty. After finishing the course, they will return to join the teaching.

Besides, there is also a full team of foreign teachers, lecturers inside and outside Thai Nguyen University with doctoral degrees participating in teaching with an average of 30 lecturers per school year.

Faculty’s training programs are increasing and the quality of training is constantly improved to meet the requirements of the labor market. The Faculty not only trains the university degree, but also has offered postgraduate education since 2016.

Currently, with 07 training majors at university degree, 02 majors for master’s degree, the training scale of the Faculty is 3,500 students of English, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and France.

The Faculty has established international relations with universities, organizations from the US, France, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Korea, Russia, Australia, Taiwan (China), the UK, etc. The Faculty is implementing more than 60 programs of linking training, internships, teacher and expert exchange with international partners.

It can be said that, with the direction and facilitation of Thai Nguyen University, the efforts and high determination of the leaders, staff and lecturers, the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​has had a process of preparing to have a strong foundation for higher development steps.

The Faculty has fully converged the necessary conditions to be able to progress to establish a Foreign Language School – the foundation of the School of Foreign Languages ​​(Thai Nguyen University) in the future.

And in the future, the School of Foreign Languages will develop into University of Foreign Languages, in the direction of modernization, integration, autonomy, and becoming a prestigious, quality, brand and class foreign language training institution.

After its establishment, on the basis of the current stable works, the School of Foreign Languages will gradually elevate its strategy and start moving to a new stage. It is the stage of development, with the aim of improving quality and affirming the brand.

In the future development strategic orientation, the school focuses on a number of specific important tasks such as: enhancing cooperation with localities, companies, and business groups to meet human needs. force; establishing a high school for specialized languages, to nurture and develop foreign language skills for children of people in the Northern midlands and mountainous areas; establishing an international training association center with the participation of teachers and experts from prestigious schools in the region and around the world, attracting foreign students and students to study.

It can be seen that the establishment of SFL is the result of striving efforts, in accordance with the current law of social development towards university autonomy.
